Des Moines Liposuction Surgeon
Liposuction sculpts the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. It is particularly suited to those areas that do not respond well to weight loss or exercise.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction, also known as Suction Assisted Liposuction (SAL) cosmetic surgical procedure that removes unwanted localized deposits of fat cells from the body. This is a highly effective treatment used as a means of body contouring. It is not, however, a treatment for obesity or cellulite. For a lot of men and women, not even proper diet and exercise can rid them of those fat deposits that create their undesirable disproportionate body contour. Unfortunately, most often, these areas are due to genetics.
Where is Liposuction performed?
Liposuction can be performed in a variety of locations, but most commonly performed on:
- Abdomen & Flanks
- Inner & Outer Thighs
- Male breasts
How is Liposuction Performed:
Liposuction is performed through small inconspicuous incisions in the areas to be treated. Dr. Bergman or Dr. Folkers perform liposuction using the more advanced Tumescent Technique. The Tumescent Technique, sometimes referred to as Liposculpting, produces less bleeding which means much less post operative swelling, ultimately allowing patients to return to normal activities much faster. With the Tumescent Technique, large volumes of saline, adrenaline and local anesthesia are infused into the fatty area being treated to purposefully cause swelling. This enables Dr. Bergman or Dr. Folkers to maneuver a thin hollow stainless steel tube, called a cannula, which is connected to high pressure vacuum, into the fatty tissue throughout the small incisions. The cannula is gently moved around under your skin to loosen the unwanted excess fat and that fat is suctioned out of the body. The result is a resculpting of bulging areas into a more attractive contour. Although Liposuction sounds like a relatively simple procedure, Dr. Bergman and Dr. Folkers use a very critical eye to accomplish your desired final look.
Initially you will have a consultation with Dr Bergman or Dr. Folkers. He will go over the following:
- Evaluate your health & review your medical and surgical history
- Discuss your personal expectations
- Discuss your options, potential risks and recommended treatment plan
- Provide a detailed description of the procedure, post-operative care and outcome
- Take photographs
- Discuss total cost
As with any surgical procedure, patients are asked to stop smoking for a specified period of time and to avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs.
What to Expect:
Liposuction is most often performed as an out-patient procedure at an accredited surgery center under general anesthesia. You will awaken with either a compression garment or elastic bandages covering the treated areas to help control swelling. These bandages are typically worn for two to four weeks. Dr Bergman or Dr. Folkers may prescribe medications for pain, as well as an antibiotic to decrease your risk of infection. If non-absorbing sutures are used, they are typically removed in seven to ten days as well.
Although you can expect to be quite swollen, most patients are able to return to work in two to three weeks. It may be several more weeks before you can resume all normal activities and exercise. Most patients report noticing immediate results as the swelling subsides, however, the final results will be most evident anywhere from one to six months after the procedure. The suctioned fat cells are permanently gone and with regular diet and exercise, you should continue to look your best for years. With liposuction you will rapidly be well on your way to fulfilling your desired self-image!
